Abortion is Practical
Girls’ and women’s reasons:
Underage, accidental pregnancy, don’t feel mature enough, interferes with education/career, chance of miscarriage, partner doesn’t want a child, many boys and men don’t pay child support, risk of illegal or unsafe abortion, not ready for another kid, poor health, burden on parents and grandparents, incest, rape, interracial rape – what girl wants to raise the child of a rapist. Girls and women don’t want someone telling them to give birth.
Society’s reasons:
In one poor country the average woman has seven kids. It’s the woman who carries the burden. Abortion empowers them. It empowers minorities and the poor. The rich have more ‘access’. Abortion reduces the number of orphans, adoptions, single parents, ‘sudden’ marriages, fatherless boys, girls paid to keep quiet, and crime. Pornography and prostitution aren’t going away. Banning abortion threatens the progress we’ve made with birth control. Many sports and entertainment stars have slept with hundreds of partners – few people care. People want to enjoy responsible sex without being judged. One said ‘If men could get pregnant, abortion would be legal [in all states]’.
These are practical reasons, yet too many Americans frustrated with other issues see this one as making them the ‘moral guardians of life’. Oh boy. They are against stem cell research, euthanasia, and morning after pills. They are against casual sex. same sex marriage, and interracial dating and LGBT. They preen themselves on righteousness, but in the end are as prejudiced, biased, narrow, and hypocritical as anyone.
Abortion is far more accepted in most of the rest of the world. It’s time to do the same.
